Job Opportunity: Community Development Specialist in Livingston County
/This is an entry level professional position responsible for assisting in a variety of planning and management functions within the applicable Livingston County Department (Economic Development or Planning). A considerable amount of autonomy and independent judgment is exercised when performing the duties assigned. Assignments may increase in complexity and responsibility as the incumbent increases in professional competence.
Work is performed in the office and in the field. Supervision of others is not a responsibility of this class. The work is performed under the general supervision of the assigned supervisor. A Community Development Specialist does related work as assigned.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Assists with special projects related to infrastructure/utilities, housing, transportation, environmental issues, economic development, and shared municipal services;
Assists in developing, administering, and assessing policies related to budget, program, and agency procedures and performs studies and analysis for special projects and research assignments;
Acts as the liaison between the County and public interest groups and other organizations involved in community development;
Participates in meetings with civic and business leaders, town and village boards, and other interested organizations to determine regional and community development needs;
Assists with preparing grant applications and grant implementation;
Collects and summarizes data relative to capital improvement projects, including but not limited to project status, schedules, reviewing project milestones and deliverables, and budget/cost benefit analysis;
Answers requests for information from the public and other County departments; and
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Opportunity: Part-time Planner for Town of Tonawanda, NY
/2026 Part-Time Planner
Job Description:
The Town of Tonawanda, NY is currently seeking an assistant planner on a part-time basis (<20 hours/week) to work in the Office of Planning and Development. The successful candidate would be working with project applicants in the current planning and economic development section under the direction of the Director of Community Development. Additional work on long-term planning projects may be assigned as needed including the Comprehensive Plan Update and work on the alternative transportation program.
The Planning and Development office hours are 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The Town will be able to provide paid compensation at a rate between $21.59/hour - $35/hour depending on qualifications. Ideally, this position would be filled with a candidate that possesses a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning (MUP) or related field, but it may also be filled by someone with less education and experience including a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and less than two years of experience in Town planning. This part-time position does not include any other fringe benefits from the Town, but could potentially lead to full-time employment with the Town that would include other benefits.

The New York Upstate Chapter of the American Planning Association is a membership group of about 600 persons across the upper part of New York State. We are a Chapter of the National American Planning Association (APA) are required to hold elections for the officer positions every two years. The terms are for two years, beginning the January of 2027. We are a completely volunteer board and have administrative assistance to help with organization and day to day activities. There are five different sections: Capital, Central, Southern, Genesee Valley, Western. We encourage everyone to become involved in both the sections and in the Chapter board. Involvement with APA is a great way to meet other practicing planners from across the state.
In March of 2026, the nominating committee will begin to solicit individuals interested APA members in running for the various elected offices. We meet typically a zoom call bi-monthly for on Friday mornings from 10:30 am until about noon depending upon activity. There is an annual conference in October hosted on a rotating basis of the various sections around the state where we all meet in person. As a volunteer organization, there are committee assignments and everyone donates time for specific tasks as requested by the President.

Job Opening: Enforcement Officer for the Village of Lake George
/Status: Permanent Part Time, 10-20 +/- hours a week (varies in off-season)
Salary: $22.00/ hour (non-benefit eligible)
Qualifications: Either of the following:
(a) Associate’s degree in construction technology or a comparable field; or
(b) Graduation from high school and two years of experience in building construction work which involves construction compliance regulations.
Required Skills: All the following experience/skill set:
· Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, Computer Use and Typing
· Must be able to work across enforcement disciplines
· Must be able to understand construction documents/plans
Duties: This position involves assisting the Village of Lake George Planning and Zoning Office with normal day-to-day enforcement operations. Specific duties on a weekly basis would include, but not be limited to:
· Answer inquiries in person, and through phone / email
· Work with contractors with issues on-site at projects
· Partake in weekly construction inspections of local projects
· Partake in monthly stormwater inspections of SWPPP projects
· Partake in seasonal visual observation for compliance and issuing notices/letters for compliance issues or violations
· Assists with general office duties as needed

WNY Section Updates: Student/Professional Career Recap!
/We had a FANTASTIC turnout at our Student/Professional Career Workshop this past Monday night! We want to first thank all the professional volunteers for their time and sound advice. We also commend all the students who attended outside their class and free time to participate. We hope the feedback on resumes and practice with interviews helped to foster new thoughts and that some lasting connections were made!
Our panelists were excellent in providing some experiential and professional knowledge. Shout out to Angie Hernandez, Angela Keppel, Jonathan Bleuer and Laura Wilson for going above and beyond to help us.
Lastly, thank you to the UB School of Architecture and Planning and the UB Office of Alumni Engagement for providing the space and refreshments for our attendees.
