APA NYU relies on volunteers like our dedicated board of directors to advance the association’s goals. Leading that charge of dedicated volunteers is our Chapter president who sets broad policy for the association and governs its affairs. Now’s our time to give a shout-out to Sean Maguire, APA NYU Chapter President, Sean M. Maguire, AICP CEcD

🟩 Region you represent: All of Upstate NY

🟩 Why you are involved in APA NYU: I first became involved as the chapter newsletter editor more than 20 years ago. I had the opportunity to organize programming for the Capital District section and then served as Section Director. I joined the Chapter Board as a member of its awards committee before being elected Vice President and now President. I’m happy to be into my second term through the end of 2026. I’m involved because I love this work we do as planners, and I want to support people who are similarly passionate about our commitment to communities!

🟩 What's your favorite thing about being on the board: As Chapter President, I really enjoy meeting other leaders in our association and taking away new ideas that help us better serve our members. There are best practices out there that help shape how we deliver the benefits of being APA members right here in New York.

🟩 Fun fact: In my free time (?), I’m the founder of the ☘️ Upstate Irish Arts Center and each month I organize an opportunity for young musicians to explore and play traditional Irish tunes together. Since it was founded in mid-2023, I’ve also raised thousands of dollars to help build our instrument library. I’m a better organizer than musician but always trying to improve!
