Job Opportunity: Principal Planner for Westchester County Department of Planning
/Located in the Department of Planning - White Plains: Under general supervision, an incumbent of this class formulates, plans, coordinates and directs technical and non-technical environmental studies relating to the long-range planning of natural resources and the environmental quality of Westchester County. Responsibilities include providing technical assistance to municipalities and County departments, and supervising and participating in the analysis of the environmental impact of capital projects proposed by the County. This class is distinguished from the Associate Planner level in that the Principal Planner is also expected to organize, direct and supervise the work of a number of technical and professional positions, as well as manage the programs, projects and services involving consultants, municipalities or contracted employees. Supervision is exercised over professional planning and administrative support staff. Does related work as required.

The St. Lawrence County Planning Office is seeking an entry level Planner to join a group of other professionals working in the largest County, by area, in the State. The successful candidate will have strong communication and writing skills and be familiar with GIS. Work will be varied but responsibilities include collecting and analyzing data, preparing graphic materials, assisting with community planning projects and programs, and staffing various advisory boards such as the County Planning Board, Environmental Management Council, Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board and Fair Housing Taskforce. The work is closely reviewed and is performed under direct supervision of a higher level Planner or the Director of Planning, but incumbents are allowed to work under more general supervision as they increase in professional competence.
