We are saddened to learn of the death of former CDPA President
and Capital District Section Treasurer Diane Sturman.
Diane F. Sturman, 67, of Indialantic, Florida, died August 19, 2009 after a 3 1/2 year battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., Diane graduated cum laude with honors in chemistry from Bryn Mawr College. She received a master of science in chemistry from Cornell University, teaching certifications in chemistry, physics, and mathematics from Montclair State College and a master of regional planning degree from SUNY Albany. She has been an associate member of technical staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J., a science teacher in Summit Jr. High School in Summit, N.J. and Linton High School in Schenectady, N.Y. Diane served as a member and then chairperson of the planning board in New Providence N.J. where she was subsequently twice elected a member of the New Providence, N.J. Boro Council. After a move to upstate N.Y., she was appointed in 1989 as the town planner in Niskayuna, N.Y. where she served in this capacity for ten years. During her subsequent retirement and residence in Indialantic, she was an active mentor of students in the Take-Stock-In-Children Scholarship program. Diane is survived by her husband of 44 years, Joel; her sons, Daniel and Michael; her seven grandchildren, Amelia, Caleb, Emily, Helen, Mark, Samantha and Yu Yu; her sister, Carol Falcione; and her mother, age 97, Stella Falcione. They, as well as the students and communities she has served, will forever keep her in loving memory. Funeral services will be held at Gutterman and Musicant, 402 Park Street, Hackensack, N.J. at 11:30 on Sunday, August 23 with interment following in Cedar Park Cemetery. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Diane's memory to Hospice of Health First, 3462 N. Harbor City Blvd., Melbourne, FL, 32935 or the charity of the donor's choice.
