The Town of East Greenbush Planning and Zoning Department (PZD) seeks a Planning Intern.
By assisting PZD staff in the performance of their duties, the Planning Intern
learns about the planning profession; the functions and activities of a
municipal planning department; and provides a fresh perspective and insight on rules, procedures, and planning/design best practices. Under the supervision of the Director of Planning and Zoning, the Planning Intern performs entry level professional planning duties. There can also be some flexibility to tailor duties and work tasks to suit the incumbent’s interests/skills and/or accommodate curriculum needs.
Responsibilities and Tasks
Provide support to PZD staff on current and long-range planning tasks; assists with land development application review
Assist PZD staff collecting and preparing data for, reviewing documents related to, and contributing input to various planning projects, such as the Comprehensive Plan update, Complete Streets, Natural Resource Inventory
Develop content for Town webpages maintained by PZD
Stormwater/MS4 program implementation and/or development assistance
Perform planning, property, and other records research; assist with response to requests for
Assist PZD staff with meeting preparation and calendar management
Conduct basic office functions as needed, such as data entry, file management, and customer
Other tasks and projects related to PZD priorities and/or the incumbent’s skills and interests;
may assist other Departments with special tasks
Strong written and oral communication
Strong research and analytical skills
Motivated self-starter able to work independently
Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Flexibility and desire to work on varying planning projects
Bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in or recent graduation from a masters program in urban/regional planning, landscape architecture, public administration, environmental science, engineering, or related disciplines
Knowledge of or interest in municipal planning
Basic understanding of planning principles
Facility with common computer application, such as MS Word/Excel/Outlook and web-based applications; MS Access and/or GIS skills a plus
Hours of Work
To be mutually agreed upon at time of job offer. Work days/hours are flexible, but it is desired that the Planning Intern work approximately 15-20 hours per week during the academic year. During the summer months, there may be the possibility of working more than 20 hours/week, depending upon workload, staffing needs, and funding availability.
The salary amount offered will be dependent upon educational attainment level and relevant experience, up to a maximum of $19/hour.
Working Conditions & Physical Activities
The job involves desk work which may be interrupted with phone calls, errands, and meetings. Data entry is done at the computer terminal. Fieldwork may involve exposure to a variety of weather conditions, steep terrain, and construction sites.
