Job Opening: Principal Planner, The City of Saratoga Springs

The City of Saratoga Springs, New York seeks a highly motivated, engaging, and technically-educated planning professional to assist the City in its planning goals as Principal Planner. This individual reports directly to the Administrator of Planning and Economic Development and requires a high level of professional expertise and performance in planning, assigning, reviewing, coordinating, facilitating and undertaking a variety of complex planning tasks. This individual will contribute to a diverse planning work program, conduct technical research, assist with public engagement, collaborate with partner agencies, coordinate internal and external projects, supervise department staff, and contribute to the overall advancement of the planning and economic development office.

Required skills and abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge in land use/municipal planning, development review, SEQRA, and assistance to a municipal land use board

  • Advanced ability to analyze, organize, interpret data, draw conclusions from raw data, and compile reports to present information to all audiences;

  • Advanced ability to communicate effectively, in oral and written formats, to technical and non-technical audiences

  • Experience growing effective working partnerships with a diversity of agencies and individuals

  • Ability to coordinate committees and facilitate meetings

  • Project management

  • Supervisory/ management experience of staff.

  • Advanced ability to operate a personal computer and utilize the Microsoft Office suite

Desirable skills and abilities:

  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS

  • Experience with web-design

  • Experience with presentation/graphics software
