Job Opening: Chief and Principal Planner, Oneida County Department of Planning

Oneida County Department of Planning currently has several positions open, which require a motivated, engaging, and technically educated planning professional. The individual selected will contribute to a diverse planning work program, conduct technical research, assist with public engagement, collaborate with partner agencies, coordinate internal and external projects, supervise department staff, and contribute to the overall advancement of the planning program.

Required skills and abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following planning disciplines: land use, municipal (urban or rural), environmental, watershed, hazard mitigation, economic development, transportation, and regional planning;

  • Advanced ability to operate a personal computer and utilize the Microsoft Office suite;

  • Advanced ability to analyze, organize, interpret data, draw conclusions from raw data, and compile reports to present information to all audiences;

  • Advanced ability to communicate effectively, in oral and written formats, to technical and non-technical audiences;

  • Experience growing effective working partnerships with outside agencies;

  • Ability to coordinate committees and facilitate meetings;

  • Project management;

  • Supervisory/ management experience of staff.

Desirable skills and abilities:

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite;

  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS;

  • Experience working with performance metrics;

  • Experience working with NYS SEQRA;

  • Experience managing Federal and State funded programs;

  • Financial management.

With a demonstrated history of successful planning project work, the ideal candidate will have the ability to draw together the right resources (people, processes, and tools) at the right times to coordinate and plan for enhancements throughout in Oneida County. The ideal candidate is skilled in consistently and effectively managing time and workload, taking a proactive approach to projects, and is ready to work in a challenging, complex, and always evolving work environment.

The position(s) will be filled at the Chief Planner or Principal Planner title or at a title appropriate for education and expierence level.
