Job Title: SENIOR PLANNER (GIS) - PROVISIONAL

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves contact with public and private organizations involved in compiling data on community resources. The position maintains personal contact with government representatives to explain detailed information pertaining to decisions to be made on planning programs. The work calls for a level of discretion in dealing with highly sensitive and confidential information. The functions include participating in the identification and application of State and Federal grants for the County’s Planning and Development Board. An incumbent of this class prepares and develops geographic information system applications such as computer mapping, database development, programming, and support systems for use on the central GIS database. Incumbents are expected to exercise independent judgment as the position is responsible for acting in a lead capacity in the coordination and implementation of project initiatives; does related work as required.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:  Montgomery County or a Contiguous County. Applications will also be accepted for candidates living outside the required location. However; applications for candidates living outside of the required location will be accepted on the condition that the candidate must relocate to the required location within six (6) months of appointment into the position or must vacate their position immediately. Candidate's living outside of the required location must sign a residency declaration at time of appointment and provide two (2) acceptable proofs of residency within six (6) months of appointment. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:

  1. Possession of a Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited or New York State college or university in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, engineering, or a field closely related to planning and two years experience in municipal, community or regional planning; one of which must have been in a GIS Capacity.

  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four year college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, engineering, or a field closely related to planning and four years experience in municipal, community, or regional planning; one of which must have been in a GIS Capacity.
