Why am I a planner? Why am I on this board? Why do you care? All good questions without succinct answers but I think the through line is that we care about the success of our communities and the future of our profession. I was honored to be elected your Chapter President last year and am looking forward to working with our talented and engaged group of board members to create communities of lasting value, raise the profile of planning and the planning profession, and provide value to our members.
I have been on the board since before Facebook. In that time, I’ve enjoyed working with my fellow board members on developing better communications tools including new websites, email communications, social media to better serve our members. Today, under the leadership of Professional Development Officer, Rich Guarino, the Chapter and its Sections consistently offer more than 250 CM credit hours annually for our members. What I’ve enjoyed the most during my time on the board, is meeting planners from around upstate, hearing different perspectives, finding common ground, and learning about all the good work our members are doing to improve their communities and our state.
I currently serve as the Capital District Regional Planning Commission’s Executive Director, having joined the organization in December 2016. I work with the public sector, business interests and nonprofit organizations to advance regional planning, economic development and environmental protection by focusing on leveraging assets and developing partnerships.
As Chapter President, I will leverage these skills to raise the profile of planners and good planning in Upstate New York. Working collaboratively with my fellow board members, and our section leadership, we will continue to provide high quality professional development and networking opportunities. Finally, I hope to enhance opportunities for legislative advocacy to advance policies and legislation supportive of planners and sound planning practices. I look forward working with our members to strengthen planners and support good planning in upstate New York.
