This year’s program includes more opportunities for recognizing outstanding student projects and professional planners who make great contributions to planning and the community.
The New York Upstate Chapter of the American Planning Association is now accepting nominations for its 2018 Professional Planning Awards. These awards recognize outstanding contributions to the field of city, town, and regional planning. Winners will be recognized at the chapter’s annual conference this October in Ithaca, New York.
“The Professional Planning Awards celebrate the hard and rewarding work that our colleagues do each day,” said Sean Maguire, AICP. Maguire, Vice President of the Chapter and Chair of the Awards Committee, said that this year’s program is particularly exciting as it launches changes that allow the Chapter to recognize outstanding work. “This year, while the awards program remains competitive, we’re pleased that recent changes will allow our committee to showcase all of the remarkable work that benefits our communities.”
The Professional Planning Awards program recognizes outstanding submissions in the following areas: comprehensive planning, best practice, grassroots initiative, implementation, public outreach, distinguished leadership, planner emeritus, and Great Places in Upstate NY. It is preferred that projects or plans occur in communities within the New York Upstate Chapter, which also includes eastern Ontario and western Quebec.
Two important changes have been made to the 2018 awards program. First, the Chapter has announced a new award called the “Upstate Fellow” in its Distinguished Leadership category. This new award recognizes long-time members of the American Institute of Certified Planners for their outstanding contributions to the planning profession. An Upstate Fellow will have demonstrated significant and transformation improvements to planning and their communities. Also, student submissions will be accepted in all categories and are no longer limited to a single category.
Nominations must be completed and submitted online by 11:59 pm on August 31, 2018. The application, nomination form, and listing of past awards are available on the Chapter’s website at http://www.nyupstateplanning.org/about/chapter-awards/
