Tompkins County, NY is centrally located in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York which has a culturally, economically and civically engaged population of over 100,000 residents. Home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, Ithaca sits at the southern tip of beautiful Cayuga Lake, in an area surrounded by dramatic gorges and waterfalls. It has a small-town atmosphere while showcasing the qualities of a larger city through an incredibly diverse and active arts and culture scene. The city is surrounded by a rolling landscape of forests and farms with remarkable views, several vibrant, picturesque villages, and an abundance of outdoor recreational activities.

It is an exciting time for the Department of Planning and Sustainability. Recent retirements and promotions have created career opportunities and served as a catalyst for change and innovation within the Department. The Associate Planner will have an opportunity to work with a remarkable team of motivated professional planners, elected and appointed officials who appreciate the importance of planning, and a civically engaged population. The successful candidate will have a passion for creating both rural and urban communities with opportunities for people to live meaningful and rewarding lives. This is a senior position in the Department and we are looking for a qualified experienced planner who can oversee and administer multiple complex projects and programs. The ideal candidate will have expertise in the areas of sustainability, climate change, energy and adaptation, however we are primarily looking for an excellent planner, so welcome applications from planners with expertise in other areas of our work program, including land use, community development, housing, land and water conservation, and transportation.
