The Town of Lake George seeks qualified consultants to submit proposals who are interested in providing professional services to conduct and manage the development of an archeological research project in the Town of Lake George, at the Lake George Battlefield Park and associates sites. The project is being grant funded from the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program.
The objective of the project is to compile a major report including an inventory of sites and features associated with the Battle of Fort George Site within the southern portion of the Town of Lake George, Warren County New York. This will be accomplished using period maps, primary documentary sources and other information coupled with non-invasive archaeological field reconnaissance and GIS technology.
The project will promote knowledge and foster understanding of the battlefield resources present in the community. The results will be used to build community awareness and support on how these resources should be recognized and treated in the future. It is further expected that this data will be valuable in succeeding community planning and project specific environmental review.
The project contributes to the overall historic preservation efforts of the community by directing new focus on the community’s history, not just of designated ‘historic site’ properties, but in regard to acknowledging that transformative nation-building events occurred throughout the specified area. Even though Lake George has been a destination for history-based tourism since the 1850’s, there is still much to discover and learn from on properties deemed historic and associated sites surrounding them.
